Blandinsville man arrested for home invasion

McDonough Co. Sheriff Rick VanBrooker and Blandinsville Police Chief Justin Lundgren report the arrest of Russell (Rusty) C. Coates, 46 of Blandinsville, IL. Coates was charged with Home Invasion, Residential Burglary, Resisting Police and Criminal Trespass to Property after a homeowner returned home to find Mr. Coates in her home. The homeowner ran from the home and the Sheriff’s Office was contacted. Coates began to chase the female homeowner around the property. She was able to elude him and lock herself back inside her home. Coates attempted to forcefully gain entry back into her home while authorities were responding. When a Deputy arrived, he found Coates near the front door of the home. Coates would not follow commands and the Deputy used the Taser. The deputy had to physically take Coates into custody, as he continued to resist.

The investigation revelaed that Coates had stolen items from inside the home and entered a vehicle as well. This occured prior to the homeowner returning and discovering Coates in her home.

Coates is also believed to have entered other properties in Blandinsville without permission. The investigation continues. Sheriff VanBrooker encourages residents to call the Sheriff’s Office or the Blandinsville Police Department if they find their property has been entered consistent with this case.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Illinois State Police, the Blandinsville Police and the Blandinsville Fire Department.

Coates is lodged in the McDonough County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.

The investigation continues.

Local Arrests on Federal Warrants

Three McDonough County residents have been arrested on federal warrants in a continuing crackdown on local drug activity.

Terrell C. Jones, 23, was originally arrested by local authorities on Aug. 19 when 61.7 grams of cocaine was found in the car he was riding in with two other men.

As part of Operation Sheep Dog, the U.S. Attorney’s Office accepted the case and Jones was transferred into federal custody.

According to McDonough County Sheriff Rick VanBrooker, Operation Sheep Dog is a new push that focuses on habitual criminals and gang-related crime.

Also arrested on a federal warrant was 33-year-old Amanda D. Hastings, of Colchester.

As part of Operation Saddle Up, Hastings faces charges of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine.

She has been transferred from McDonough County Jail into the custody of federal authorities.

Also this week, local law enforcement officials arrested 30-year-old Molly M. Rusher, of Colchester, on charges that she violated terms of her supervised release in an ongoing federal methamphetamine case.

She was arrested earlier this year as part of Operation Saddle Up on charges of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine.

Rusher has been transferred to Peoria and put into federal custody there.

VanBrooker said that the arrests are the result of a joint drug investigation involving Macomb, Bushnell, Blandinsville and Colchester police, along with the sheriff’s department.

VanBrooker said he expects more arrests to come as part of Operations Sheep Dog and Saddle Up.
